Austin
Spare, (1886– 1956)
Biography
Austin was born to a London policeman, and showed an artistic
streak from an early age, attending evening classes at Lambeth
Art School. He later became an apprentice to a stained glass
maker (Powell’s of Whitefriars St.)
His later artwork, full of sexual undertones, figures and magical
symbols brought him the attention of Aleister Crowley, to which
he contributed four small drawings to Crowley’s publication
– The Equinox.
During World War I, Austin was conscripted in 1917, serving
as a medical orderly of the Royal Army Medical Corps in London
hospitals. He was commissioned as an official war artist two
years later.
