Sir
Frank William Brangwyn RA RWS PRBA HRSA (1867 – 1956),
Biography
Frank was a Welsh artist born in Bruges, Belgium whilst his
father was fulfilling a commission to decorate the Basilica
of the Holy Blood.
Frank Brangwyn received artistic training from his father, and
later from the architect and artist William Morris. Aged 17,
one of Frank’s paintings made it into the Royal Academy
Summer Exhibition.
Brangwyn was inspired by the light and vibrant colours of
the southern countries and travelled to Istanbul, Spain, Morocco,
Egypt, Africa and Turkey.
In 1895, Siegfried Bing, a Parisian art dealer (known for
starting the Art Nouveau movement), encouraged Frank to try
mural paintings, stained-glass windows and carpet designs,
which gave him a name in America. .
