John Hassall (1868 – 1948) Biography John Hassall was born in Kent and educated in Worthing at Newton Abbot College and at Neuenheim College, Heidelberg. In 1888, Hassall emigrated to Canada after failing to gain entry at Sandhurst, but returned to London two years later before leaving to study art in Antwerp and Paris. In 1895 he began working for David Allen and Sons designing adverts, which spun into a 50 year career. Hassall’s illustrative style lent itself to Children’s books, and he produced a large number of volumes of fairy tales and nursery rhymes. In 1900 he opened his own New Art School and School of Poster Design, in Kensington, but the school had to close at the outbreak of World War I.
