Philip Wilson Steer (1860 – 1942)
Biography

Steer was born in Birkenhead as the son of a portraitist, also called Philip. Steer became an artist himself in 1878, having studied at the Gloucester School of Art and later at the South Kensington Drawing School.

Between 1882-1884 he studied in Paris, at the Julian Academy and later at the School of Beaux Arts under Cabanel, and went on to become one of the few English Impressionists.

During World War I, he was recruited by Lord Beaverbook, the Minister of Information, to create artwork of the Royal Navy.
