William Hodgson published his poems under
the pen name of Edward Melbourne. Born in England, William
volunteered for the British Army when the First World War
began, and served in the 9th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment.
He was awarded the Military Cross after holding a captured
trench for 36 hours without reinforcements or supplies during
the 1915 Battle of Loos.
Hodgson was killed on the first day of the Battle of Somme
whilst attacking German trenches near Mametz, and his remains
now lie in a Devonshire Cemetary. |
